No, sadly I am not referring to myself...but MY Mom!
I called her yesterday all excited about the Washi Tape technique (see last post) and my iPhone 4 totting Mom said, "oh yeah....i forgot all about that technique." what???! Apparently super hip chic Mom learned of this technique awhile ago and failed to share this with me, hmpf! Fortunately, I am big enough and got over it.........

Spent the afternoon at a librarian meeting at the ever fabulous Horizon Bookstore in downtown Traverse City. We got to spend a couple of hours hearing about some wonderful children's books. I will highlight some of those over the weekend. Then I got to shop for some books......even better.

My evening was filled with glazing, and more glazing.......fairy houses, pendants, jewlery bits. Can't wait to load the kiln in the morning to get these pieces fired. Then I can share here.

So, the other day I read about a new book Us, Celebrating the Power of Friendship on friendship at Christine Mason Miller's blog. At first glance I thought, hmmm not a bad idea. But the more I think about it, I love it! As I worked at the library today, watching kids interact, girls in particular...some interactions were positive and others....not so positive. Then thinking about my sixteen year-old daughter and her teenage relationships made me realize, this book is NEEDED. If we can teach girls to work on friendships from an early age we can help foster healthy relationships for a lifetime.

Another fun thing I found on a blog was how to make Washi Tape....ooooohhhhhhhh my goodness.....genius! Check out Craft Test Dummies. Super, super cool!!!!!

Finally, I am participating in a gift exchange organized by Craftaholics Anonymous. My swap partner is from California. We have started to exchange some e-mails. Some of my friends from Minnesota that i swap with on a regular basis have signed up too. We are looking forward to sharing our swaps at the end of November.

As busy as life gets, I am so lucky.

These darn kids.......just make it all worth while.

I started working this year as a librarian at a local elementary school. It is perfect for my life right now. The hours are consistent (unlike last year when I was a guest teacher) and I feel like a grandparent. I get to see all of the kids at school......they make me smile.....and then after their library time I send them back with their teacher. I don't have to deal with the craziness of testing, kids bouncing off the walls from indoor recess day after day when it pours, etc. I get to read the kids magical stories and watch their minds relax and dream for 30 minutes. It is perfect.

This new schedule has allowed me commit to making art for sale. I have had one craft show, a makers market no less.......talk about a dream. However, it wasn't the best experience. I didn't sell like crazy.

But I did it.

My family supported me while I worked crazy hours, man does it take a lot of work to pull this off. And I have another show next week. This whole experience has helped me to see that

I CAN do it!

It has been a real growing experience.

And what has been a perfect compliment to my growing experience........this blog Christine Mason Miller . She has a new book coming out Desire to Inspire and has been featuring 60 second interviews (love that.....time is of the essence.....so i can read a snippet and check out their blog and get back to life here at home) with the contributors. It is a fun, quick way to discover some pretty amazing women. I am so empowered from what I have read since the start of the month.

The last couple of days we have done our best to soak up these last bits of summer....

at least for this week.

Yesterday and today we were in the mid to upper 80's.

tomorrow we dip down to 60's and then I heard the high for Thursday might be 52.

So after school we hit the beach for some fresh air, warm breezes, sand between our toes, and laughs.

Tomorrow.......I am cranking up the torch to make some earrings!

My 8 year old wanted a pair too. So I made a mini version. They are adorable on her.

I took pictures and accidentally deleted them....sigh.

I just whipped through The Cookbook Collector.
I thoroughly enjoyed.
It was a nice escape on some unusually cool days here in the north.

I spent a good deal this weekend playing with the torch and practicing (despite the heat).

Here is my new set up to torch the wire. I am a bit stressed about using any of the torches in my regular studio space. It does not have a window so I am super cautious about the fumes.

So for now, I torch in the garage.

This makes me happy. When I can ball BOTH ends of the copper wire!

This is a pile of copper wires that I heated up for a LONG time and was not able to ball both of the ends. I am worried that if I used them after all of the heating they would not survive the process to turn them into earrings. Need to find out if I can recycle the heated copper pieces?

Here is a like and dislike all in one. I was feeling pretty darn good, my first earring turning out fabulous. Seriously fabulous and then.......the second earring, going good until I bent the paddle. Oh my....not good!

Tomorrow is another day. Practicing and hopefully creating!

I thought I had a decent bead collection.

But then...

I started making boho bliss hoops in the Deryn Mentock's new class and realized...

I need/want different beads for these designs.

I love projects that make you look at things that you didn't before.

I'll be honest, I didn't look at briolette beads very much until now.

so here is how I organized my beads this past Spring.

After taking Alisa Burke's color class last summer I realized that I enjoy color and things sorted by color but for some reason was not applying that to my stash of beads.

I stocked up on some containers from JoAnn's during a fabulous sale.

Then I had the duty to own up to all of the beads that I have bought over the years with one project or another in mind.....and clearly not following through on all of these projects.....sigh.......

These are the first attempts in my on-line jewelry class.

Working with the torch has been a trip. Mastering the balling of the copper wire has been an achievement. Putting the techniques together very rewarding. I seriously can't wait to work on the jewelry every day. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Carnival Ride of Life

Life is Crazy. Wonderful. Confusing. Busy.

Spent the past school year as a substitute teacher. Two long term positions and LOTS of one day positions.

And my art took a serious backseat.

Summer has been a delight.

Relaxed hours.

Taking two on-line classes. One photography. One jewelry. Loving them both.

Biking. Walking. Dreaming....BIG DREAMS.

Desperately wishing my husband finds work in our hometown instead of 6 1/2 hours away.

Charms Arrived

I have OODLES of Blue, White, Silver charms.............which I will photograph and post soon.
Started a long term substitute position today. I will enjoy knowing day-to-day where I will be subbing, what class and the names of the students. A smidge panicked that art takes an even further step away from reality, but I will need to focus really hard....to organize and MAKE time.

Blue White Silver charm Swap

so to sum things up.
School started.
I got busy with substituting, co-leading a brownie troop of 25 girls, being a Mom to three kids, husband working 7 hours away.......so something has to give. and it was and has been my art.

But, I did manage to pull off charms for a new swap with a new yahoo group, artcharms. I signed up innocently to make charms with the theme of blue, white and silver. and the list of swappers grew and grew....until 38 signed up. 38! a little more than what I was anticipating. But it was a deadline that would FORCE me to create. Sad that I need a deadline, but true these days.

So here are some pictures from the charms that I made, some attempts that I didn't mail and some that are to be developed some more.

These are the charms in process. I formed wire, added polymer, UTEE and ephemera.....twisted wire and these are waiting to have beads added and some sari silk (which I am LOVING!!!!)

The finished charms. I am pleased.

I had an idea to make these felted circles, add some crystal white and clear beads. Did not finish but plan to, I think these have some potential.

Playing with making balled headpins without enamel. I like these. again, potential.

I am still playing with these disk shapes and adding words.

I am signed up for Silly2, a class offered by Carla Sonheim. I was super inspired after listening to her podcast on the Notes from the VooDoo Lounge. During her interview she does a little excercise using a sharpie, sheet of paper and your willingness to let go, just for a few minutes. We have had a ton of fun doing this excercise. It then prompted me to purchase her book The Drawing Lab.

This book is FUN. I can't wait to do this with the kids. Apparently there are on-line groups that have been doing book studies on Drawing Lab. Hmmmmm..

I am a new fan of Carla. Not just because of her super fun book or the class that I am signed up for that starts today but because yesterday she sent an e-mail to everyone signed up to announce that she was going to offer 10 (ten!!!) scholarships to people that we recommend. So I entered the name of a dear friend in Minnesota, an art teacher and guess what.............................SHE WON! I amm soooooo thrilled. I am thrilled that she offered this opportunity and I am thrilled that Jean won this!!! To top it all off, Carla is totally cool with teachers sharing the exercises in the Silly2 class with their students. Sooooo generous!

Okay another note.

My Mom, who recently upgraded to an iPad.....lucky....gave me her iTouch (yes, with a fist pump!). You see, I have never had one. Wanted one, yes, had one, no. But now I doooooooooo! and I love it. I love the apps. I know.....all of you have been there done that, but for me, it is still a HUGE novelty. Anyway, BIG fan of Podcasts. I love going for my walks and getting to hear artists speak and inspire me. So if you so desire, check out Notes from the VooDoo Lounge. You won't be disappointed.

I worked up a little "Thank You" note to send to my friends in Minnesota.

I was inspired byKelli Perkins and a stitched pagelet painting tutorial.

It was super fun to do.

I apologize for the glare. I haven't decided if I am going to mail this "thank you"as a giant postcard or slip it into a manila envelope. So.....I covered the photo with a thin piece of plastic from the fabric store just in case. These are my creative friends that I lure into doing projects with me.

We have set the next swap....and it is pendants!!!

Hiatus over, time to catch up

Good grief. A month. Seriously. oops!
So consider it a European Holiday, to bad it wasn't really an extended vacation.
No, it was life. Life, soaking up the last bit of summer with the kids. Then, that dreaded first week back to school, where we are snapped back into the reality of....schedules. Yes, schedules. Curse them. But....a schedule isn't all that bad. Now i will retreat to a schedule of sorts that allows me time to create. As that kinda got lost during the summer vacation freedom schedule.

Here is a little sneak into my trip back to Minnesota. My dear friends gathered for a night of laughs, drinks and some embellishing of the felted bangles. Fun! Lots of fun!!!!!

Described as Liquefied Minnesota Summer

Also known as: These Boots are Made for Drinking

1 oz vodka (I used Citron)

1 oz Gin

1 oz Mint Syrup (1 c. water, `1 c. sugar, handful of chopped mint leaves. Dissolve over high heat. Cool and strain out mint leaves)

Fresh Lemons/Limes

Cava Sparkling Wine (any sparkling wine or champagne)

CHARTREUSE

Shake Vodka, gin, mint syrup and freshly squeezed citrus juice--I used about a shot of citrus juice since there was no measurement given.

Strain and pour over ice. top with Cava and a splash of Chartreuse. Garnish with Lemons, Limes and Mint leaves.

Enjoy and don't drive.

Felted Wool Bangle Bracelets

so we are planning a return trip to Minnesota to see our dear friends (although some of our dear friends will be in Michigan while we are in Minnesota...how ironic and what a bummer!)

But for those friends that are going to be there, I am whipping up a "project" for our Girl's Night Out.

I was inspired by Bevy of Bangles for this latest craze of mine. I have been knitting up a slew of these bangles to be felted. Yes, even knitting one up on the ferry to Mackinaw Island. The little two year old sitting next to me was mesmerized. I have been experimenting with different wools and some non felting fibers, just to see what happens. Here are a few of the bangles before felting. By the way, I have changed the pattern a smidge. Instead of the technique listed in the instructions for forming the circle, I use the Kitchener stitch instead. It gives a smoother join. Check out knitty's instructions for the kitchener stitch.

Once they are felted they look like this..........

How does a Girl's Night Out play into these bangles you ask?......we will embellish these little gems with more fibers....or beads...or whatever the ladies decide. I have bought some thick embroidery floss to use to wrap around the bangles. It will be fun to sit around, embellishing, catching up, laughs and I am guessing a delish cocktail to enhance the embellishing!

Mackinaw Island

Clay Whistles

Part of our Summer Art Plan was to make clay instruments. We have made shakers and now...clay whistles. It took some experimenting, but we got the technique down and they work. Yes, big smiles all around when we heard the whistle! Now we need to get all of these instruments fired. Soon I will post pictures of the fired instrument in all of their glory!

Summer in Full Bloom

Our youngest and I started a lot of our vegetable garden with seeds early in the spring. So when something grows so wonderfully, so grand, so beautiful....

it truly brings a smile!

And these rascally gourds.....are taking over the entire garden. Here is a gourd that is climbing, rather successfully I might add, up one of the sunflower plants.

We are going to be abundant in gourds, ABUNDANT!

I am loving my growing egg plant and the most gorgeous purple flowers.

tie dye

We love to Tie Dye.

We try to do it at least once a year.

So with company here we decided to go for it and have some fun.

The storm clouds were brewing the sky so our tie dye effort was a bit hurried.

It did start to rain, which resulted in lots of laughter and craziness!

Then the process of rinsing and rinsing and rinsing and rinsing some more!

And the end result.........

Note to self: do NOT buy Fruit of the Loom t-shirts, they SHRUNK up terribly. So by the end of summer, our 7 year old will have about 12 tie dye shirts. Honestly, she could wear the XL.....that just isn't right!

We also tie dyed wash cloths, which are the pieces that they are holding up.

Gel Glue Batik

First you apply gel glue to your fabric.

We used pillow cases and cut fabric in the shape of triangles for my banner that

I plan to hang outside on the front porch.

Once the glue dries you can begin to paint.

We thinned cheap acrylic paint and went to town.

Once the paint has dried you need to soak in VERY hot water to start to dissolve the glue. You will need to take a coarse brush (think something like a finger nail brush bristle) to rub off the glue and paint (paint that got on the glue which is no problem at all) and viola....check out these AWESOME results!

The kids were genuinely thrilled. My seven year old gave me a big bear hug when she saw her finished pillow case. That makes all the prep work on my end so worth it!

Ahhhhh, the Cherry Festival has expanded to the double Ferris wheel.

Who knew that people staged an area at the carnival.

I was admiring this "garden" at one of the carnival's food vendors.

Then I saw who was running the site.

This sweet old lady.

I wanted so badly to meet her, to hear her stories.

I think I need to make some art, based on her stories.

I need to name her.

To have a series of work, based on her stories.

Fabric ring

I tell you I am loving these circles, that are evolving into funky flowers

that are evolving into charms, pendants, and this ring.

I wore it last night to a concert at the Cherry Festival (to see a fun band, Tribute 1964), outdoors on a beautiful night on the bay with fun friends (sorry........I digress)

The ring was a hit (yeah!) so was the band!

Wren saw me struggling to snap a picture of the ring....so she generously offered to model for me!

soaring into a holiday weekend

some of you have heard me refer to "living up on the mountain"

Mind you....the "mountain" I refer to is nothing compared to "real" mountains.

It is just a big hill.

We have a sign on one side of the mountain with a run off for the big trucks in case they need it in icy weather.

My ears pop occasionally when we go up and down from the mountain.

I have a friend who teases me about "needing to put snow chains on" or "using the high altitude baking directions on the brownie mix"

So yes, we joke about the mountain.

Some days it is snowing at the top of the mountain and not at the "base"...

I am serious.

But we do live on the bay, so that might have more to do with it then actual height.

but today....we had a true advantage of being on the mountain.

we enjoyed our lunch while the Blue Angels roared overhead while they practice for the

scheduled show tomorrow and Sunday

These were all taken from our house. Not too shabby.

Looking forward to the "real" show tomorrow.

Shaking things up

We are making the theme for clay this summer.....

musical instruments

so far we have some rockin' shakers

next on list, clay whistles and Udu drums

did I hear some ooh's and ahhh's, much like the anticipated fireworks this weekend????

the goal is to sit around the fire with a collection of handmade instruments

and make some music

The other way we are shaking things up

My husband has just accepted a new job

a job that will be challenging and exciting and more in line with his experience, his liking

but, it means he is heading to another state...Green Bay, Wisconsin

In the meantime, the kids and I will stay here.

We hope and pray as we have for years that the economy will turn

then more jobs will be available here

and we can ALL be here.

Until that time, a change was needed. He hated his job here and that is NO way to live.

So now....the next chapter in our lives will unfold, we will have an opportunity to

explore another area and take things

one step at a time.

I have been inspired.

writing on walls.

to go with some of my over ambitious summer plans of art, art and more art

not only for me, but the kids too (ages 15, 13 and 7)

I want to showcase their art, to encourage their art making, to give then a sense that we "see" them as artists (because they ARE!)

so I took that BIG plunge and dare I say.....

I painted on the walls.

Frames that is.

the wall is not complete, I think it will look better with lots of frames, it is a start.

Now mind you, I have NO fear of painting walls....I change my color scheme at the drop of a hat

my family can attest to this, my husband especially as we have painted a LOT of walls in our married life.

So I approached this project with the understanding that when I/we tire of this "idea" I will paint over it.

why not use frames you ask.

2 reasons....

1. cheaper, much cheaper! and I am on a "wants" and "needs" program so this is falls into the "want" category....so how to do it on a budget....paint instead of buying LOTS of frames!

2. It will be so easy for me or the kids (I am always encouraging independence) to plunk their art on the wall. Just get some of those cool sticky tabs that don't leave marks and viola. Instant art show.

The typewriter, which for those of you who remember awhile back...i couldn't resist these little buggers.....and can I say KIDS of ALL ages love them. (The kids friends will come over and you will hear plunk, plunk as their attempt to type). Anyway, I put one of our soon to be second grader's writing sample into the typewriter to showcase her writing.

So, if you are daring......go ahead, write on your own darn walls. It is liberating!

Altoid Tin Swap

I am participating in another swap, this time it involves an Altoid Tin. Instructions were to alter a tin and then fill with goodies from your art space. I stumbled a bit, over thinking how to "alter" my tin. Finally, I just went for it. My first tins were altered with polymer clay in the theme of a "shrine". I have been fascinated with shrines for quite some time. I think this is something I need to explore further. Then I did a second set, after an inspiring issue of the latest Cloth Paper Scissors magazine. Filling the tin was easy.....as my studio space is chalk full of "stuff". A bit too much I might add. I am busting at the seams and the space is no longer enticing.

So tonight our son is acting as chef. We have Jamie Oliver's new book and we love it.

The kids get to pick a new recipes out of this cookbook (or cookbook of their choice) and then try it out. Tonight he is making baked Camembert pasta. Can I tell you that it smells delicious in here right now!

In Awe of Mother Nature

While gardening last night I spotted a black fly on some tall garden phlox.

I thought it odd that the fly was lying there like that, not even "seeing" the spider.

Then when I discovered the spider I was in awe of it's clever camouflage.

It is moments like these that I realize how lucky I am to be in the right place at the

right time with my eyes, mind and heart open!

I believe it is a white crab spider...or something similar from my quick Internet search. If anyone knows more about these let me know, I am not afraid, just curious....always curious!

Taking a break from "chores" and enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

The kids have retreated to the blow up pool, which to be honest, every year I think they will have outgrown it. But not yet. I sit here, under this umbrella. Catching up on the laptop and listening to their squeals.

Our thirteen year old certainly is using his size to his benefit and clearly the 7 year old enjoys

being tossed and splashed!

Finally, I am getting around to posting pictures from the swaps that I participated in this spring. The first one that I am sharing is the Scrumptious Squares. These are 1 1/2 inch squares of artwork. We were inspired from the Mixed Mania by Debbi Crane and Cheryl Prater.

I think I just heard "water balloons" which means I might just want to take cover. I will post ATC swap results.....later, from a safe spot!

I am thoroughly enjoying the purples that are surrounding me. Including delicious purple cabbage. I made this Creamy Avocado and White Bean with Slaw last night. Delicious, delicious, delicious!

creamy avocado and white bean wrap is found at eattingwell.com. It is a wrap recipe, but being gluten free (and not having a gluten free wrap on hand) I just served without the wrap and it was wonderful. The chipotle chile in adobo sauce was a treat for the senses.

2 TB. cider vinegar

1 TB canola oil

2 t. finely chopped canned chipotle chile in adobo sauce

1/4 t. salt

2 cups shredded red cabbage

1 medium carrot, shredded

1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

1- 15 ounce can white beans, rinsed

1 ripe avocado

1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 TB minced red onion or green onion

4 8-10 inch whole wheat wraps or tortillas

whisk vinegar, oil, chipotle chile and salt in medium bowl. Add cabbage, carrot and cilantro; toss to combine. mash beans and avocado in another medium bowl with a potato masher or fork. Stir in cheese and onion.

To serve, spread about 1/2 cup bean-avocado mixture onto a wrap and top with about 2/3 cup cabbage-carrot slaw, roll up and serve.

Yup, kids are officially out of school. Yahooooooo!
Already started our "art" list.
Gonna be fun.

So far:
paint a couple of antique chairs (don't be horrified, they were already painted....but not quite the color that I like.)
paint a small side table
mosaic a few small tables
make Udu drums (clay drums...we will jamming by a camp fire later this summer!)
turn one hallway into a rotating art gallery......I want the kids and I to be able to display our art work (photo's, video's, sculptures, etc.) I want to print/silk screen/stencil antique style frames in various sizes on one wall to allow for 2-D art. Haven't quite figured out my exact plan yet.

Thought I would share this video. Kelly Rae Roberts posted this the other day in our Flying Lesson's Class and....man was I touched.

Dear Mrs. O,

Thank you for trusting me with the care of your kindergarten class this year when you couldn't be there. I thoroughly enjoyed my days spent in your classroom. I loved the kids for all of their unique personalities. They were creative, quirky, fun, loving, smart and real. I feel so blessed that our paths crossed and I was given the opportunity to have this experience. To show my appreciation and a heartfelt THANKS from the kids we created this collaborative project. They drew wonderful little drawings. I then reduced and made color copies of their original art. With those color copies, I transferred the drawings to polymer tiles. Using those tiles and the mosaic technique I decorated the border of a memory board for you.

Thank you for all that you do to make the start of education a great start! Have a wonderful, relaxing summer.

Last day of school.....for me

Today was my last day....subbing that is....or being the "guest teacher" which is the new catch phrase. It has been an interesting school year, as a sub that is. It was pretty rare for me to come home without a story, or two or three. Some days I came home exhausted and overwhelmed and other days I came home.....feeling like I had contributed in some way. As I have said before, everyone should have to sub for ONE school day. It will put teaching into a whole new perspective. I have always respected the profession, but after this year.....it has gone to another level of respect. Seriously, there were many days that I would hardly have time to eat lunch as I would be prepping for the second half of the day while the kids were at lunch/recess. A couple of friends had encouraged me to blog about my subbing from the get go. In hindsight I wish that i had written more down. Darn me for not starting that journal.......that'll teach me!

For the most part the kids would keep me on my toes with funny comments or actions. They were mostly sweet.....but the older they get in elementary school the trickier they are. Today I subbed for a 5th grade class. I looked into their relatively innocent eyes...knowing that next year they would be in middle school. And after my experiences subbing in Middle School this year....I am here to tell you that the sweet innocent look will fade to a more jaded, tough attitude.

One of my favorite stories is about a kindergartener, Mallory. She came in one morning with a really pathetic look. By this time, I had a pretty good idea who was a scammer and who wasn't. She wasn't usually a scammer. Some of the kids think "sub = ticket home", using the "I don't feel good" card. I caught on to them pretty quickly! So..... back to Mallory. She looks at me, with glassy eyes. "Mallory...what's wrong honey?" "Mrs. Wodek...I have the staring fever." "The what fever??????" "The staring fever...if I stare at anything for more than 8 seconds I get a fever." (Turns out that Mom was out of town and she was not adjusting all that well to her absence.)

Another funny story is about Harrison, another kindergartener, with behavioral issues. Apparently earlier this school year he was having a rough day and spent a fair amount of time in the office. At the end of the day he told the Principal that he was the worst "President" ever! The Principal later made a deal with Harrison, that if he had 30 days of good behavior he could be the "Vice-President" of the school for the day. Harrison finally earned that privilege last week. He spent the day being Vice-President and let me tell you, the school did it up right. He had his picture taken and a photo ID badge was made. He helped make the morning announcements AND he was the Principal's right hand man during the award assembly, for the whole school to see. He really lived it up. It was great to see the pride in his eyes.

I will miss the little buggers. But now, I will get to hang with my little buggers...although a 15 and 13 year old are not quite little buggers anymore are they. At least our 7 year old still falls into that category.

dreaming of summer

I think I have summer fever! I am so looking forward to the laid back days, the summer breezes, the walks along the beaches, the hikes up the dunes, hanging out with the kids, more time for art, trips to the CSA farm, trying new foods, new flavors. So to honor my Bohemian inspired Summer Fever......I created a "beach bag."

These are the flowers that I have clipped to the handle. I have made them with clips that i can easily clip to other things (jean jacket, t-shirt and whatever else needs a little accessory!) The flowers were inspired from a video from the House of Three blog. These darn flowers are everywhere and it was time I got on the band wagon!

Flip Flops! Of course. I made these from a tutorial on Alisa Burke's blog. I am always so inspired by Alisa Burke, her blog, her art...it is so fresh, alive, and fun!!!!

And a funky, chunky bracelet made from odds and ends that I had. Go figure. I had paper/fabric beads left over from a Stitch Alchemy project, polymer beads because I am always playing with polymer and then some beads that I just had in my collection. You gotta love a project that comes together like that!

School is out next week and then......I will be making more art and.....sharing here.

P.S. I got my ATC swap and Scrumptious Squares swap in the mail last week. I will get some pictures and upload, they are fun, fun!

Good Gravy...where does the time slip to. I wish I could say I have been bird watching.

Well I have been to some degree, enough to notice some exciting new visitors. I am in awe of the beautiful Orioles that I have lured to our yard. I was worried our massive back birds would not be too friendly, but....we have two sweet Orioles!

The substitute teaching business is booming as the school year comes to an end. I can't really pass up the jobs, as I know once school gets out....I will have much more time. Time to get back to Artistic Mother projects and other projects that I have brewing in the brain. Weekends don't seem to count anymore. Kids and their sports are ruling supreme. I love the kids activities, but man oh man...they take a chunk of time out of your schedule.

So as promised, some updates. I was able to deliver beautiful Mother's Day projects to a couple of classes that I worked with this past year the week before Mother's Day. Oh the smiles. I think mine was the biggest. The kids were so surprised to see their little creations turned into shiny smooth glazed pendants strung onto colorful cord necklaces. You can see some of the serious artists at workk below. Yes indeedy, they took this project very seriously! It was something for Mom afterall!

Hopefully I will have more updates soon. Which...... means I have managed more balance in my life (BIG SMILE!).

Sumptious squares leads to Dreams!

Oh those darn sumptious squares started something for me. As if I needed another distraction. But maybe I did? This was fun to create. I learned about a small Works art show at Dennos Art Museum that anyone can enter, as long as the piece is no larger than 5x7x1. So........I started playing and dreaming.

Oh yes......we had fun!

Sunday was rainy. Slightly gloomy.

So we popped over to the Dennos Art Museum for inspiration.

we ended up getting inspired, and the giggles and lots of goofiness!

A perfect day!

They have this super cool room at the Dennos with a projector a screen, and super cool technology to create these images of the kids as they moved, danced and posed. They were going crazy in there.

They could have stayed for hours. And I would have kept on snapping picture after picture.

Now....I want to make my own fabric with these prints. If you saw the most recent season of Project Runway and the episode where they got to design their own fabric......oh boy, oh boy!

scrumptious squares

The Yahoo Mixed media Group is doing a swap for 1 1/2 inch squares for the scrumptious squares in the Mixed Mania book study. I was going back and forth with ideas and then....with deadline looming I just went for it. This is a mosaic of polymer pieces. Can I just say that these were a TON of fun to create. I have lots of tiles with text. I would just grab a few and see what they said. And went with it. I love how they conjure up little funny stories in my head.

This is from a series of squares with vintage text, paper fabric (left over from the Stitch Alchemy book study) and lots of UTEE (colored and clear). Unfortunately there is a lot of glare from the UTEE, making it a bit of a challenge to photograph and scan (I tried both).

Can't wait to see what the others have done with this swap!

Letter Inspired

I love adding text to my art. So I mixed some words into a fun pendant for a necklace. Using sheets of mica, I sandwiched some vintage text, added a rivet and viola a fun pendant. To add another personal touch to the necklace I added two "petoskey" stone beads. Petoskey stones are one of Michigan's beautiful stones found along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan.

Letters, Mail and Earth Day

Oh geez.......been a tad bit overwhelmed lately. Playing catch up here.
Happy Earth Day! Honestly, we should celebrate Earth Day everyday!!!!!

In honor of Earth Day I used an eco friendly product, Regreet, which is a fun way to re-purpose greeting cards. I love it. Who doesn't love getting mail, the good ol' fashion mail that you get to hold and open and treasure! I wrote some long overdue letters to a few friends and slipped in a "hop along kit," a kit to repurpose the card that I sent. What is super fun about all of this is that re-greet will track your card, so you can see where it has traveled. I LOVE that! So my cards are officially on their journey. Since you don't want to write a big, juicy note in the card, I created my own stationary with photos and wrote on the back of the paper. Now my friends get a quick snapshot of our lives, a fun card and a reason to pass it along and share the love! Go check out regreet today.....they are having a sale in honor of Earth Day!! and Yes, I do know the owner of Regreet. She is a dear friend back in Minnesota. One of the funniest people I have had the honor to know. When we get together I am guaranteed to be in tears from laughter. She is an amazing story teller....amazing! She started this business last fall and it has already expanded (yeah!!!!). I am so happy for her. Check it out!

So what HAVE I been up to? Did a fun project for a silent auction donation. Using the garden theme that was given to me, I glazed a terra cotta pot. I was inspired by Moroccan tiles for my design. I am pretty pleased with the results.

Tomorrow I am heading into two elementary classes to do a fun clay project. One class will be making some funky flower pendants for Mother's Day gifts...I can't wait to see how they turn out. The pendants are in a bisque firing right now so they will be ready to go tomorrow!

We loaded up the car to enjoy a day at the "beach" on our Stay-Cation for Spring Break 2010. We headed for my favorite place...the Dunes.

I brought my Doodle Journal, jelly pens and after some hiking plopped down to doodle and journal (to be finished this evening). Now that is bliss.

Some of the sights and inspiration of the day....

View from one of the mighty sand dunes that I tackled. It was amazing. There was a cool breeze coming off Lake Michigan. The temperature at the beach was a good 20 degrees cooler than inland.

A day at the beach is well worth the cooler temperatures.

I just love our little world in Northern Michigan! We have friends from Minnesota who are making Northern Michigan their Spring Break destination (clearly not your typical "hot spot" this time of the year....bless their hearts...they had hoped to be skiing but we have had amazing weather and no snow left to ski on. Darn for them; but no complaints from me.) When I found out that we were going to be able to see them on their visit I had to whip them up a little souvenir. So I made this sweet little cupcake with the map of Michigan...a heart in Traverse City and then the title "Spring Break 2010"

A Doodle journal, a project related to the poetry journal for the Artistic Mother Art Group. I started to make the Poetry Journal...but it was getting a little more funky than I wanted....so I went with the flow and created my new "doodle" journal. I love it! I still plan to make a Poetry Journal.

In addition to my "weekly" goals I was surprised to find out that I had not missed the date to send in a pendant for the Cloth Paper Scissors Pendant Swap....so I went to town. I decided not to fight the things that I am drawn to (circles, text, colors, textures) and work with them. I pulled a few things from my studio that I haven't figured out how to use and viola! I made the polymer "text" disks several months ago. They never were used the way I intended to....design issues. So there they sat. I knew they had potential. I am so glad that I just went with the flow on this project. I have mailed this little pendant off to Interweave. But I am here to tell you...more are already in the works. I can't wait to show off a finished necklace!

Spring Break Fun....in the kitchen

To celebrate the start of Spring Break I wanted to surprise the kids with a treat! I happened to catch a recent episode of Martha Stewart with a segment in the kitchen with a baker from the Baked Bakery making the Brookie . I am hear to tell you that the recipe was a HUGE hit at our house last night! It is a combination of a brownie and a chocolate chip cookie!!!! The kids think I am genius, even though I kindly reminded them that I did not INVENT this cookie, I just re-created it.....regardless, you won't be disappointed. Now I need to work on a Gluten Free version since I have not had the pleasure of tasting them. Also, a quick note: I did not have 4" pie tins in my possession, so I made them in our cupcake pan. They were smaller of course, which to be honest in the days of blown out of proportion portions.....this size is perfect! So I filled the well greased cupcake spot half way with the brownie mixture. After it had chilled for an hour I added "paddies" of the chilled chocolate chip cookie dough. I had plenty of dough, so perhaps next time I should make them a bit meatier.

Inspired by Alpha Mom I made some salt dough clay for our youngest and her friend today. There was no limit to their imagination. They spent hours playing with the clay, which is the easiest thing to whip up.
Salt Clay Dough Recipe:
4 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
2-21/2 cups of very hot water
Mix together, knead until smooth. To speed up drying process you can put into the oven at 250 degrees.

We painted some of the salt dough to make beads.

After forming a bead shape, they then pressed into some small glass beads. One thing that happened that would anticipate next time....the dough "rises" to some degree, so some of the holes that the girls put in their beads filled in while drying in the oven. Not a total loss as they are gems to be used another way...their idea is to use them as "Easter Eggs" for their American Girl dolls. They plan to hide them for an American Girl Doll Easter Egg Hunt. I love that!

I sealed the beads with Collage Pauge so that we won't be finding little beads all over the house.

They finished their heads, which they built around a recycled glass jar, with some acrylic paints...I mean a LOT of acrylic paints. They prided themselves in rainbow colored hair people. Now we can add some water in the glass jar inside the head and plop in some flowers for a real fun vase!

Jewelry Frame

Another project that I have been working on this week....a frame of sorts for my jewelry. I lovingly pick out my jewelry at art/craft fairs or make my own jewelry after painstaking picking out beautiful beads...so why not show it off a bit more.

Using a cutlery tray, I covered the silverware sections with paper. Sealed the paper with Traci Bautista's Collage Pauge (I have been so happy with this product, I have it in Glossy and Matte!). Then drilled some holes to insert screws. I adhered antique buttons, handmade glass beads (Shelly Heglie and Earthenware Beads) and flea market finds to the heads of the screws. Viola...a place to hang my bracelets and necklaces. I drilled two holes to hold a dowel rod to hang my earrings from. I colored the dowel rod with alcohol inks (love, love, love the purple). I have another tray that I am working on that will also serve as a shelf for my funky rings....which is a new addiction!

I am really pleased with how this project is turning out....and seeing the jewelry as the pieces of art that they are. A bonus...I get to "see" the colors that I am obviously attracted to and inspired by!

cupcake sweetness

ohhhhhhh..Spring is in the air.

Lovely little cupcake to sweeten my day.

One of my weekly goals was to create a mosaic cupcake. Yeah!! A completed goal. YES! This goal setting business is good, very good. However...a few things I did not account for. What you don't realize is this was my SECOND mosaic cupcake. A few days ago I posted that i was going to add a little more to my cupcake. Yeah, it went horribly bad. My tweaking......was too much. I believe Shona addresses this in her Artistic Mother book...knowing when enough is a enough. Well, it took me until I went tooooo far. So, i pitched that little lovely and started anew. Still some more tweaking for the next cupcake, which there will be more mosaic cupcakes. It was a fun project. I eventually plan (a monthly goal) to have a group of friends come over to make cupcakes...so after another go at it, I hope to have the project ready to go as a "party" idea project!

Also.....in regards to setting "weekly" goals something that I haven't quite figured out...household chores.....yup....I need to factor in some "artful vacuuming" and "painterly dusting".....ahhh it is a learning process. I will get the hang of it!

sun stripes

Of course, when I snapped the photo of Wren with the shadows...I immediately thought of zebra stripes so I had to dig out the picture from the zoo......just had to. Couldn't resist.

Spent the afternoon subbing in a middle school art class. The art teacher I was filling in for is passionate about clay, much like me. She had a stack of Ceramics Monthly magazines so I took every odd moment I could to pour through the magazines. I do believe working with clay has been added to my weekly goals!

Last night I started my mosaic cupcake. It is the sweetest darn thing. Hope to post a picture tomorrow. Just a little more that i want to add......just a little more.

Mosaic Fun

One of my goals last week was to finish a wine bottle mosaic project. The timing ended up perfect as we had a Hockey Team Party on Saturday. So this little project ended up being a hostess gift. I made a faux cork out of polymer clay, added some wire and beads to create the handy note/photo holder. I added a Thank You note and photo of the coach with the girls. I plan to make some more...have a little stash on hand.

Goals and To-Do Lists

Finally....took my papers to the next level. I added some text to create some "to-do" lists..family and art related. I also created a "weekly" art goal sheet. I decided to have some fun with this sheet. I created a revised one for some dear friends in Minnesota. To bridge the distance we do art swaps...we have done two charm swaps and the last swap was a "stuffie swap." For whatever reason...this swap has been the hardest for some of the ladies in Minnesota to finish. So..... as a joke I sent them the "revised" weekly goal sheet.....as a "monthly" goal sheet since they are feeling very overwhelmed.....you know how life can do that to you. I added "meet for swap" as a goal for the month. I also have a very goofy picture of our group at the bottom of the goal sheet. I have been fiddling with this "photo-shopped" photo of us. I like to think that I look that funky (and slender)...every time I see the photo I burst out laughing, so i figured placing it on the Goal sheet was fun. Something light hearted to remind me to have fun with life....but keep reaching for the stars!

Since having "goals" on my mind I feel like I am getting more done. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is definitely a step in the right direction! Hopefully I will be posting a few projects that are on my weekly goal list for this week.... a mosaic cupcake and a "frame" for my jewelry.

Ahhh..the luck of the Irish....the Leprechaun managed to get away safely.....but he did leave a boot behind. There were some curious moments before the "trap" was lifted...wondering if the Leprechaun was still under there. Thankfully, we can assume he got away without any injury.

I did get an opportunity to add a layer to my Artistic Mother project papers......

Today I will take them another step further. Adding some details and then the "to-do" list information of my choice. It has been a fun transformation. It is a great "first" project to get your feet wet.

Trapping a Leprechaun

This afternoon, with the sun streaming in, my son helped our youngest set a trap for the Leprechaun. She has grown up hearing tales of when her brother set a trap when he was in second grade... home with the chicken pox a few years back. Thankfully, the little bugger escaped the trap (he was lured with a sparkling ring and some coins) however..he did lose a felt boot. I love these innocent moments. I know they won't last forever so I thoroughly enjoy them while I can.

We have been blessed with warmer temperatures and SUN, SUN, SUN! Our days start with a pink, purple wash, then a blaze of gold. It is delicious.

The sun has prompted this. Which....I love, but worries me...it is a tad bit early. I know we aren't done with snow. It is Northern Michigan!

I haven't been totally neglecting my art...but my time has been compromised a bit, okay a LOT, by the end of the hockey season excitement. We had a banquet and an exciting season finale with our son's team winning the Championship......very exciting over the weekend. So...with the regular hockey season behind us and a relatively slow week subbing I have been able to focus a bit more on my art and my "artistic mother" projects. I have been working on my goals, which I am loving this exercise more and more. I have been reading poetry: Why I Wake Early by Mary Oliver and Poemcrazy- freeing your life with words by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge. The Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge book has been helpful in terms of gearing up or rather freeing up to write poetry. It is a book I bought a few years ago to help inspire the kids to write poetry....I am glad I have it..for me this time!

I also have started to paint my papers for the to-do list project. I have painted papers for backgrounds before, but haven't used Gesso and I am loving the effects/results. It adds a texture and depth to the colors. I love it. Tonight I will start adding some details (oil pastels, stamps and words) to the papers to take them further in the project.

I stayed with muted colors for this first round. Once I have played around I might use more bold, pure colors...but the first layer I am quite pleased.

Now to keep my eyes peeled for the Leprechaun!

Week One of the Artistic Mother Art group......

taking pictures of the kids in motion. I realize how I used to snap a WHOLE lot more pictures on a daily basis when the kids were younger. So it is fun to have the camera out and snapping away. The older two are going to be a little tougher.....but they have been warned I will be taking pictures and for them to just be natural.

Over the weekend I had some frustrating "creative" blocks. I have these ideas in my head and am having a tough time translating them into a physical form. So after many failed attempts on Friday I started the day on Saturday knowing I had to abandon the project for a few days and start a project that always seems to get me into a good rhythm...mosaicing. So I started to mosaic this wine bottle. It felt good....to let go of the one project temporarily and to start something and "see" it coming together.

I am ready to start making "paper" for the Artistic Mother project. The more I read the book the more excited I get. The goal setting has really gotten to me...in a good way. I am feeling empowered. I have always had "lofty" goals....."try something new". I have learned that what has been missing is that I have needed to be more specific in my goals. Maybe obvious for others, but apparently not so much for me. But now I am "seeing" the light.

I splurged this weekend and got a copy of The Artistic Mother (it is fabulous!), the latest Somerset Studio (a fun trip down Alice in Wonderland) and the new Belle Armoire Jewelry (I am secretly wanting to be a jewelry designer). I have been soaking in the articles, photos and juiciness. An Artistic Mother is really good. I am looking forward to the on-line 12 week workshop that Trudy is hosting. I need to tweak my blog so that I am ready for the workshop. I have been wanting to form an art group locally and it just hasn't happened yet. I think this experience will be just the nudge that I have needed. I am definitely in the Stage 1 mode (as referred to by Shona in the book), planning... with all of the new articles to read this week in my new magazines and the blogs that I like to peek at when I have a moment.

I also finally got a copy of Push (the movie Precious is based on this novel) by Sapphire...it is good! I started reading it one day while subbing at the High School during one of my breaks....I have been oh so patient on a waiting list from the library and can't wait to finish it. It is intense.

I have some pictures from the "good fortune" birds that I was lucky to receive from the swap this week. Again, I love to see the different interpretations (birds and owls) and the variety of "paper" made using the techniques from Kelli's book.

wow! i just stumbled upon a wonderful new book, An Artistic Mother by Shona Cole.......it is beautiful. I had to learn more about her so I buzzed over to her blog http://shonastudio.blogspot.com/ and am hooked. She has a twelve week plan of art action....gotta love that. Having just finished the fun Stitch Alchemy book study with the Mixed Media art group I appreciate so much the "schedule" if you will.....it makes it so you "have" to make art. It isn't pressure in a dreaded way, but in a "permission" sort of way. Does that make sense? She focuses on digital photography, poetry and mixed media, yeah!!!!!! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy and then.......more projects. Speaking of which......since I am not subbing today I need to be making art.

Finished the Darn hat!

Yes, folks.....the hat is done. No more drama about the darn..blankety blank hat. It is finished! And....I don't like it. Not because of the challenge but because it ...well...it doesn't look good, on me that is. My Mom has made comments over the years that she wants to find a hat that looks good on her and I have to admit I kinda scoffed at that...what do you mean, all hats look good on you (and me I thought). well I am here to tell you this hat...oh it's bad. And after all of that work. It actually looks good on Olivia, our oldest daughter with lovely long hair. But, I am afraid it isn't "hip" enough.

My hat making has spurred on three hat requests from the kids. So I have already started making "snow board" style hats with ear flaps. Super easy (YES!) and I can actually watch tv/Olympics and hold a conversation at the same time.

Onn another note, I made the most delicious Spanish inspired quinoa last night. Oh my gosh....love, love , love it. Now....I want to make some spanish inspired art to make it a "complete" experience. to be continued..........

Feeling kinda spoiled

After my half day of work on Friday, then cleaning and errands I came home to find this in the mail......a package for me!

And then.....it gets even better...it is my beautiful love doll that I have received in the Mixed Media on line art group swap. This Love Doll swap was inspired from the wonderful Stitch Alchemy book by Kelli Perkins. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this Love Doll. I feel so lucky. Thank you Donna!!!!!!!

I also received this precious Valentine from three delightful boys in Minnesota....they quite obviously have a talented Momma! Thank You Ische Boys!!!!! and the pictures (minus the gorgeous family picture) were taken by a budding photographer....Emmett..who is 5!

These pictures just make me smile and remember a fun summer night visiting Minnesota 2009!

This morning I got a call from the sub office to fill in for a special education aid at the middle school. I took a deep breath, middle school subbing experiences have not been the most pleasant. Don't get me wrong nothing awful has happened, just the middle school age presents a lot of "attitude". I agree to going in, it was for half day, I can give it a whirl and see how it goes. Let me say.....it was REWARDING and really makes you stop and appreciate everything you have. My guy was about to turn 16, high functioning cerebral palsy. He was the hardest working student in the class. He kept an upbeat attitude despite the excruciating pain that he is in due to hip issues. I feel so blessed to have gotten that call this morning. To have been presented with the opportunity to reflect. Reflect on how darn lucky I am, to have been able to share the morning with an incredible soul, to slow down...cause I am here to tell you....you aren't rushing when you walk with a limp and a cane....I was provided with moments of being very present. It was refreshing and perhaps for me, much needed.

substitute teaching and little knitting

Today was my second day substitute teaching for a particular kindergarten teacher. I love when I can fill in for more than one day. All of that learning of the classroom schedule pays off when you can use it for multiple days. This particular school I was filling in at has a reputation of being a bit on the tough side. All of the kindergarten teachers have had blue Mat training, a training to help diffuse burst of anger. We are talking about 5 and 6 year olds. Sad. I can attest that the class was a bit of a challenge and.....kinda wiped me out. So the heart.....a graffiti heart i spotted in downtown Traverse City, with a bit of snow....is to remind us all of the beauty of life....even in odd moments and places and natural or man made.

And now for my Olympic Knitting update.....as you may have already noted, there is no "update photo." My knitting has taken a back burner from our family schedule last night and tonight. I was able to sneak in a couple of rows throughout the day (when the kids were at lunch and when our youngest was at hockey)...so I feel an overwhelming need to pick up the needles. Now considering how much this pattern has frustrated me, I am reminded of how much I enjoy the rhythm of knitting. Hopefully I can whip out a couple of rows yet tonight.

Mardi Gras

We love Mardi Gras in our house.
In 1994 my husband and I splurged and went to Mardi Gras and to this day it is one of our high lights. We would go back in a heart beat. Some pictures from our trip. I think they transcend time, as Mardi Gras, is Mardi Gras.....not much changes. It is colorful, full of music, warm breezes, hurricanes (drinks), beads, parades and LOTS of people, lots of HAPPY people.

Day Three results are.........

not sure how easy it is to "read" the photo...but the arrow points to a whole row where things get funky. I ripped out 4 rows after and then figured out what the problem is. So...I have grown as a knitter with this experience. But as you can see.....I did not rip the whole problem area out....I decided to move on. But, if I were to do knit this hat again and I can honestly say now that I know what the problem was (human error on my part) I might consider it.....might....might not. We'll see.

Family Time Fun

Taking full advantage of a day off from school and substitute teaching we all headed for one of my favorite places...the dunes! For some sledding. We sailed down the dune and across the snow covered parking lot. Trust me...you don't go up and down a lot, but it is fun!

Then we headed in downtown Traverse City to take in the snow sculptures and ice carvings, part of the 2010 WinterFest. We all cracked up at the "surfer gnome"!

Knitting Olympics Day Two

Day Two of the knitting Olympics........and I have not grown any fonder of this pattern. It requires a lot of concentration and while I find knitting relaxing...not so much with this pattern. But....I did complete the 8 row pattern more quickly than the previous night so i guess my "speed" has improved and that is what the Olympics are all about. Beating your best score.

I did get to watch Canada wins it's first gold medal at home.....that was exciting. Had to re-watch K.D. Lang's performance in the opening ceremonies, just amazing. Here is a youtube video of K.D. Do not attempt to adjust your monitor......that seriously is all that i was able to accomplish last night. This pattern...grumble, grumble.......it will be lovely when it is done, I may even consider to mount the hat in some way to display during the "off season" because this is truly a labor of love. And trust me, this isn't anything special, it's just tricky for a gal like me. But hopefully the Olympic challenge will do the trick. I am obligated to knit daily (or nightly as my schedule allows) so hopefully this will help me to get into a rhythm of the pattern.

So I did watch the Olympics in an auditory sort of way (one must keep eyes glued to what you are doing and keeping good track of each stitch)...exciting to watch team USA win two medals in speed skating and learn about some of the women rocking the moguls on the ski hill.

Opening Ceremonies were awesome last night. AND......I got started on my knitting. The ribbing was the easy part. Now the concentration begins. I have "waited" to work on this project because it is a pattern that you HAVE to concentrate on and with three kids and little windows to knit....could make this tricky. But....it is the Olympics after all!

Also, I have to give a shout out to my long time favorite K.D. Lang, what a beautiful song last night and then the "doves" that fluttered around. Technology is so amazing. Now, it is time to be amazed by the athletes.

Watching Speed Skating at the moment and those Orange fans for Sven Kramer, from Denmark, what a hoot.

Yarn Harlot: The 2010 Knitting Olympics

Just the inpiration I needed. I am signed up to start and hopefully finish a hat pattern, the Koolhaas Hat, that I picked up a couple of years ago. I have the beautiful Shokay Yarn Shambala (100% Yak) to knit with. It would be nice to finish this while I can actually wear it, afterall....it is still winter!

Good Fortune Birds = Goodness

Good Fortune Birds, aren't they sweet. These were made for another swap with the Mixed Media on line art group for the Stitch Alchemy (Kelli Perkins) book study. Each participant was asked to send 3 strands of 5 birds. We have not received our swapped birds in return yet...so the anticipation is high. The birds are made from fabric paper, as described in the previous post. It was interesting to consider how similar the sheets of fabric paper were, obviously each of us as individuals are drawn to certain colors. It will be a challenge to myself to purposely use different colors in my next attempts.....to see where I can branch out a bit more. For these birds I tried to incorporate different embellishments on each bird......use of tulle, embossing powder, hard body paste, etc. Again, I wasn't thrilled with my fabric paper as a whole but felt completely different and excited when I saw the sheets in smaller pieces. At the bottom of the strand we were supposed to use a bell, like a cow bell. But since the directions by the swap host asked us to mail in a priority envelope (not box, envelope...trust me I went over the directions many times, took the directions to the post office to ask my oh so sweet postal workers and we all agreed....it was clear we were supposed to use the envelop).....a cow bell was not an option. So I had to get creative. I used felt balls along with smaller bells, polymer clay ring and made my own "bell".

Again....if you are interested in mixed media.....this book will not disappoint. Form an art group and challenge yourselves to try a new technique each week. Small steps, without investing in a lot of time or materials and the sense of gratification is priceless! Then when you have lots of sheets of fabric paper (because you will, it is addicting) you can make things to swap (book marks, good fortune birds, love dolls, post cards, etc....) Have fun and PLAY!

Here are some shots of my Love Doll ( you need to say it with some swagger!) that I have sent to New Mexico as part of the Mixed Media online art group swap. A few of us in the group participated in a book study of Stitched Alchemy by Kelli Perkins. Great book, but even better book to do as a "book study". It is the kind of book that if given "assignments" you can go to for inspiration and suggestions to get you going. The book study started out by making fabric paper. The book goes into details with a variety of ways you can begin your first layer. The layers are the key. You build up.....my paper included the following layers.....gluing papers to the muslin, then adding color, stamping, more color, more stamping and you keep going until you have some visually pleasing fabric. I will admit, most of my fabrics were not quite what I wanted. But...when you cut into smaller pieces, like the pattern for the love doll above...then magically the fabric paper becomes wonderful. So for the love doll the assignment was to create fabric paper, then cut into love doll shape of your own design and then embellish the heck out of it. It was great fun to see the doll come to life. I must admit, this doll took on some character and attitude....it made me smile. I want to make MORE.

One technique that I rather enjoyed was making a transfer with packing tape....for those of you who know my family you know that I have LOTS of experience with packing tape, but more in the use of actually packing up a house full of stuff. This was a fun use of the tape. Here's what you do.......find a photo copy image or an image from a magazine, key is to not use an ink jet image. Then, apply a swatch of packing tape. Burnish paper onto the tape. Once you are satisfied with the burnishing you soak in some water and rub off the paper. The image will be on the tape. You can see the transfers on my love doll.......they are the light blue rectangular pieces. I stitched my transfers to a watercolor blue batik fabric scrap that I had laying around. My transfers were from text and a photo copy of a rubber stamped image. It is so clever, simple, fun and.....oh the possibilities! Try it. A quick technique. Something to get the creative juices flowing.

Create....Creating

Hellooooooooooooo.

Anyone still out there???????

Forgive me for my absence. Let's see. I starting working part time as a sub. What an experience. Interesting. Challenging. Rewarding. And for the record......everyone should have to sub for at least ONE day in their life and I have said this many times and I will say it again and again...TEACHERS do NOT get paid enough!!!!

What else. I have been trying to suck up the courage to start an Etsy Site. Apparently I have some mind stumbling blocks.

We have a dog that is suffering from separation anxiety....needless to say my return to work has not been ideal for him. We have come home to find that he had been under too much stress and caused himself some bodily harm. But.... I am happy to say that he is getting better. Whew!

I have completed a few things and this is one. My great friends back in Minnesota that I do the regular charm swaps with are doing a stuffie swap. What is a "stuffie" you ask? Well, they are all the rage in the crafting world. They are wildly creative "stuffed" creatures. We exchanged names and I got a friend that was generous to share her home with my family when we were in between homes. We stayed for a couple of months and I am proud to say, it went really well. This friend was always amused when my daughter, a kindergartner, made her appearance before heading off to school. Her sense of style is....shall we say...very confident. She mixed patterns, colors, styles with freedom. So I tried to create my "stuffie" for her with the same sense of style. Another idea for this "stuffie" was that it would "hold" ideas for her.....the two of us were constantly coming up ideas of things to make and sometimes it was just too much. So this "stuffie" will hold the ideas until the time is right.

To say working on this "stuffie" was fun is an understatement. There was lots of chuckling and the timing of creating this as I adjust to a new schedule was perfect. Again....to my Minnesota friends.....THANK YOU! and for those of you who have been thinking about doing a swap or art night with friends.....DO IT. You will be rewarded in many ways!

oh goodness....more inspiration. So little time! I was enjoying the techniques shown in the video by Christine Adolph...thinking some nice ideas for Christmas. But I gasped when she said you could use the foils on fabric and.....my mind zipped off in warp speed. I have been playing with fabric paper for the stitch alchemy book study so this will be a fun addition to all the techniques I am experimenting with. Check out the video. It is a little more than 8 minutes long and I think you will be inspired!

I was able to squeeze in a little crafting time this weekend. I played with some old sweaters and created a "funky" scarf. I think the idea has some potential.

Then I switched gears to some miniature treats out of polymer clay. They are so sweet. Kids can't stop playing with them, I can attest that they are very durable! The lollipops are cute, but the stick needs a little tweaking, not quite right.

And a funny side note about my chock full o'Halloween charm bracelet (see previous post).......it was chock full indeed. Had a heck of a time getting my coat off and on when I wore it this weekend.....maybe it was a little too full?! Is there such a thing??????
